 No woman can be arrested before 6 A.M and after 6 P.M (CPC - Section 46).

 A Police officer could get jailed for refusing an FIR from 6 months to 1 year (IPC 166 A)

 A young boy and girl can live in a 'living relationship' and even their child is deemed legal, having full rights in the assets of his/her father (Domestic Violence Act 2005).

 If a company fires a pregnant woman, they may be punished by a maximum of 3 years of imprisonment (Maternity Benefit Act 1961)

 Only women police constable can arrest women. Male constables have no rights to do so (CPC 1973).

 If there is an unlikely death due to a gas cylinder blast, the gas agency is liable to pay Rs. 50 lakh to the victims as a compensation. To do so, the victim must lodge an FIR to the police station and submit it to the involved gas agency (As per the Citizen Charter).

 A shop keeper can't charge more than the printed price of the item but the consumer is given the rights to bargain for less than the printed price (Maximum Retail Price Act 2014).

 If you are fined for a minor crime like riding a bike without helmet or violates a traffic rule, you won't be fined for the same reason on the same day given that he has the receipt of the earlier fine (Automotive Amendment Bill 2016).

 The indian Penal code is applicable to all indian citizens and persons of indian origin but it does not cover crimes related to the military and armed forces. These are covered by a different set of laws and dealt with by military courts and tribunals.


 Under the Zero FIR A woman who is victim can register her complain at any police station - Zero FIR can be field in any police station irrespective of the location where incident occured.

Cognizable Offence


 All serious offences are cognizable.

 offences under laws other than the indian penal code which are punishable with 3 years imprisonment or more.

 Murder, Waging war against state.

 Police officer may arrest without warrant.

 Police is under legal duty to investigate without directions from magistrate.

 Cognizable offences are Considered public wrongs & therefore prosecution of offender is left to the initiative and efforts of state.

Non Cognizable Offence


 Non cognizable offences are more trivial & less serious than cognizable ones.

 Those punishable with less than 3 years or with fine.

 Absconding to avoid service of summons, giving false information to public officer.

 Police has no Authority to arrest without warrant.

 Police have neither duty nor power to investigate such offences without authority given by magistrate.

 Non cognizable offences are considered private  wrongs and therefore prosecution of offender is left to the initiative & efforts of private persons.
